Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that applies acoustic pressure waves directly to an injury through your skin. The purpose of shockwave therapy is to trigger the body’s own natural healing response and can accelerate tissue repair and cell growth leading to reduced pain and improved mobility. Many people experience reduced pain and improvement in mobility after the first treatment.

What is it used for?

Shockwave therapy is very effective for conditions such as heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, elbow pain (golf or tennis elbow), shoulder pain, chronic tendinopathies, jumper’s knee, medial tibial stress syndrome and calcifications around tissues.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments vary depending on your particular needs. A typical treatment course is 3 to 5 sessions which are applied 3 to 10 days apart. The number and frequency of treatment sessions are dependent on the patients tolerance and tissue response.

Does Shockwave Therapy hurt?

During shockwave therapy, your physiotherapist will apply a handheld device to your skin over the affected area to send pulses of acoustic waves of energy to the affected tissues. The treatment is non-invasive but can cause a slight feeling of discomfort, depending on the sensitivity of the affected area. The intensity of the pulsed waves can be adjusted to your comfort levels, and we will guide you through every step to ensure you feel safe and comfortable throughout each treatment.
