Vestibular Rehabilitation

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is intended to reduce the troubling symptoms caused by vestibular disorders, such as vertigo, dizziness, gaze instability, nausea and imbalance. Physiotherapy treatment will include a series of carefully prescribed exercises and may also include manual therapy or specific maneuvers designed to restore imbalances in the inner ear.

Will it fix my vestibular disorder?

Most vestibular disorders respond well to physiotherapy treatment. Due to the complexity of the vestibular system, a series of treatments along with a home exercise program are necessary to facilitate recovery.

What can I expect from Vestibular Rehabilitation?

During your first appointment, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment and review your medical history. Your physiotherapist may assess some or all of the following:

  • Balance
  • Leg strength and flexibility
  • Gait
  • Visual stability and mobility
  • Neck mobility and strength

The physiotherapist will then work with you to develop a treatment plan based on your assessment and individual needs. Treatment plans vary based on findings identified in the assessment but may include balance retraining, vestibular exercises, manual therapy, visual tracking exercises and a detailed program for you to practice at home.
